According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), mental health is a state of well-being in which everyone can realise their own potential and cope with life's stresses, work productively and effectively, and contribute to their community.

The mental health of an individual primarily depends on him or her and those close to him or her. The task of every modern person is to maintain their mental balance, be prepared for stressful situations and overcome the symptoms of overload, depression and emotional instability.

Mental health becomes especially important during times of war. Previous studies and the bitter experience of other countries affected by armed conflicts show that at least one in 5 people will experience negative mental health consequences, and one in 10 will experience moderate or severe consequences. According to preliminary forecasts by the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, about 15 million Ukrainians will need psychological support, of which about 3-4 million will require medication.

Mental disorders have a negative impact on the spread of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, arthritis, asthma, and cancer. People with mental health disorders are more likely to smoke and have sleep disorders, which often leads to respiratory diseases. In addition, mental health disorders encourage risky behaviour, lead to alcohol and drug abuse or destructive behaviour and related consequences.

What can help to maintain mental balance, overcome depression and emotional instability:

- Systematic physical activity.

- Quitting smoking and drinking alcohol is crucial for overcoming stress. The idea that it helps you relax is a misconception; on the contrary, it worsens your psychological state and increases anxiety and stress.

- Healthy (at least 7 hours) sleep and clear planning of our daily routine will help us avoid additional anxiety about getting everything done and feeling comfortable.

- A balanced diet.

When we are in a difficult emotional state or depression, the support of friends and family is important. If you notice symptoms of overwhelm, depression, or emotional instability in yourself, your family, or friends, be sure to consult a psychologist or psychiatrist to help your mental health or the mental health of your loved ones.
